Writing Compendium

An unusual wooden item comes in for old-fashioned French Polishing refurbishment

We see some absolutely marvellous items in our day to day work restoring and refinishing wooden furniture. This unusual piece is a small writing compendium made from Honduras Mahogany.

Officially named swietenia macrophylla, Honduras Mahogany comes from the Meliaceae family and is one of three species of tree which yield genuine mahogany timber. It’s not everyone’s favourite timber (red has been out of fashion for a while) but it is exceedingly beautifully grained and the deep rich red visually warms any environment into which it is placed.

This writing compendium was originally crafted very early last century and belonged to our client’s father.  While it was in sound order, it was scuffed and dull and needed some serious TLC.

EARTHWOOD stripped it back and applied a traditional french polishing technique to brighten it up.
